Rules for Mapping Asteroid to Meteorites

Asteroid taxonomies are from the Bus-DeMeo system and are grouped into complexes according to the rules described here . Meteorite classes are obtained from the Meteoritical Bulletin ; meteorites are assigned to groups according to mappings described here. In some cases, the standard meteorite class and group names overlap. In order to avoid confusion, meteorite classes are preceded by a "c:" and meteorite groups are preceded by a "g:". Asteroid complexes are mapped to meteorite classes and/or groups based on identifications from the literature as shown in the table 1 below. The inverse mapping of meteorites to asteroids is presented in table 2.

Occasionally mappings between asteroid complexes and meteorite classes and groups were unclear in the literature. For instance, no direct mapping between asteroids and K chondrites was found in the literature, but K chondrites have been shown to be similar to OC, CC, and Enstatites. As a result, K chondrites have been mapped to all the same asteroids as the 3 meteorite classes. In the case of a joint asteroid complex (e.g. &C/X), the meteorites that are mapped to the both &C and &X are included in the mapping. For mixed asteroid complexes (e.g. &B;&C), the meteorites mapped to either asteroid complex in the mix are mapped to the mixed asteroid complex. If an asteroid complex has been mapped to any carbonaceous meteorite groups it has also been mapped to the ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites, g:CC. Asteroids with unknown taxonomies, &U, have been mapped to all the meteorites.
